The Art of a Sunday Reset: Moving Forward Without the Weight of Your Past
In a world that demands our attention and thrives on a perpetual state of productivity, finding moments to reconnect with yourself and prioritize personal needs becomes an invaluable act of self-preservation. The Sunday Reset became a powerful ritual in what felt to me like a frantic pace of life.
While endlessly scrolling through Instagram one day, I came across a reel (I can’t remember who is was, but will link if I find him again!) and he said something along the lines of - What if your past didn’t exist, how would you move forward. Initially, I scrolled past, dismissing it as just another self-help reel aimed at making you feel like you aren’t doing enough. But a couple of days passed, and I couldn’t shake his words. The more I thought about this perspective, the more motivated I was to “do the things that scared me”. Though past experiences will always inform future decisions, I have consciously been taking my past self out of the equation and focusing on the end goal and the future I envision.
It’s been a couple of months since seeing this reel and I’ve continuously implemented this mindset of what would I do if I didn’t have my past decisions or judgements influencing me right now?
What seems like a simple self-reflection has changed my life drastically, and from this emerged the Sunday Reset. The act of prioritizing my current personal needs (even if they seem small) so that unmet needs do not influence my future decisions throughout the week. It may be a physical space reset like cleaning the kitchen or doing laundry, or a body reset like sleeping in and starting the day with a cup of coffee in bed while watching a rom-com. Whatever it may be, it means taking some time or the day to unapologetically tend to what your body, mind, and physical space need before the new week begins. Don’t let your last week, months, or years’ unmet needs impede your future success.
Reconnect with your Sanctuary
Turn off your notifications and focus on the areas around you that annoy you every time you walk by. Whether it is doing a full kitchen organization or making your bed, both resets are putting you a step ahead in finding your inner calmness no matter how big they seem. Light your favourite candle, turn off the overhead lights and put on a playlist that suits the mood your inner sanctuary is calling for.
Nurture your Body
Set aside some time to evaluate what your body needs before the week ahead. Maybe it is a rigorous full-body HIIT workout, or maybe it is a leisurely afternoon on the couch. Whatever it may be, invest the time to recognize and respond to this unapologetically.
Join the Sunday Resets
Every Sunday, I post my Sunday Reset - big or small - on Instagram. This keeps me accountable to myself.
Do you do Sunday Resets or something like it? Tag @balsamandco I would love to see it :)
